Nana is not part of her name. She is Hugh's nanny.
This blog entry is dedicated to our dog Chewie. She is a wonderful dog. Here is a little history on her.
From the very beginning, it was clear that Chewie was a lover not a fighter. We adopted her and her sister a few years back. They were the cutest puff balls that ever were. Her sister Leia was the adventurous, fun loving, and playful one. Chewie was a lump.
And, she has proven to be one no matter what the circumstances. She is also a sucker for scratchins and tummy rubs.
As the two dogs blossomed into womanhood, their hormones kicked in and they began to turn on each other. So much so that we had to keep them separated at all times. This happens with sisters but was accelerated by the pregnancy. Eventually, we had to get rid of one. We chose Chewie because of her mild manner and thought she might be better with a baby. She very much enjoyed the new freedom this brought about. She is so much happier.
My wife began reading about dogs and new babies. In some cases, the nicest dog ever would turn on the child. I guess this is a dominance thing. So, we were a little leery of introducing Hugh to Chewie. We just didn't know what to expect. Chewie is a very emotional dog. She is very sensitive too. I should also mention she is a complete coward while I am at it. Whenever one of the neighbors fires off their guns Chewie comes running and jumps into your lap. Like I said, a complete coward. She does put on a good show, however. She is all bark and wagging tail. At least she warns us.
As I said, she is very emotional. If we leave her for too long, she gets very upset and has a conniption. The duration of which is relative to the length of time left on her own. So, when we were at the hospital for several days, she was left alone for quite some time. I made it home at least once a day to spend a little time with her and collect some things we needed. My brother and sister-in-law stopped by and gave her a little attention, as well as my dad bringing snacks and treats for her. She did not handle it well.
When we brought Hugh home, we approached her very carefully. She had a bit of a fit but was suddenly curious about what was in the car seat. We read also read that you should introduce the baby feet first. She sniffed him all over for a bit and was satisfied. Eventually, it was clear she accepted him.

Chewie quickly adopted Hugh and never goes out of earshot. It is so funny. She will be outside and Hugh will sneeze. She comes running in and checks on him every time. She started laying under his swing right away. That is her go to spot now. She also likes to supervise diaper changes and feedings. Usually she approves.
I mentioned she is a sucker for tummy rubs and scratchins. Well, typically, she will hop on my lap and lay back so I can easily scratch her tummy. Now she will perch on my knee so she can see Hughbert in his swing or crib. That says a lot if she is willing to give up the scratchins.
So, I chose to take this opportunity to put the spotlight on my little buddy so the world can see what a sweetheart she really is. Hugh is going to have a best buddy for a very long time. Good job Chewie. You are awesome. That is why you are an RH Hero.
